Amish Hamburger Steak Bake (Easy Old-Fashioned Dinner)

Juicy, seasoned hamburger steaks baked in creamy mushroom gravy—a classic Amish comfort food that’s easy to make and perfect for weeknight family dinners.

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20)

  • 1½ cups saltine crackers, crushed

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • Dash of cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (for coating)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 cup milk

Optional Add-ins:

  • Sliced mushrooms

  • Chopped onions

  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • In a large bowl, combine beef, crackers, milk, and seasonings. Mix gently.

  • Shape into 6–8 oval patties. Coat each lightly with flour.

  • Brown patties in a skillet over medium heat, 2–3 min per side.

  • Place browned patties in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • In a bowl, whisk together soup and milk. Stir in optional mushrooms or onions.

  • Pour gravy over patties. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

  • Remove foil and bake uncovered for 10–15 more minutes. Add cheese in final 5 minutes if desired.

 

  • Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use lean ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

  • Add bell peppers or peas to the dish for extra veggies.

  • Can be made ahead and stored in the fridge overnight before baking.

  • Leftovers store well in the fridge for 3 days or freezer for up to 3 months.
